One for the Bucket List

When you are asked to head to one of the seven Wonders of the World , you count your lucky stars, pack your bags and board the plane before anyone has a chance to change their mind! For this week’s getaway, we traveled to the Great Barrier Reef’s Green Island Resort for an unforgettable six night getaway.

Green Island Resort and it’s plethora of marine animals, corals and sponges awaited our arrival as we made our way from Cairns. A speedy 45 minute complimentary catamaran across stunning cobalt water soon found us warmly welcomed by the friendly and professional staff of the Resort.

Tropical paradise sprung to mind immediately on entering our Island Suite. With timber furniture accented by the green hues of the rainforest, it’s not hard to see why.  The spacious 56 square metres suite and incredible private balcony definitely set our Green Island adventure off to a great start.

In contrast to the expansive ocean, guests can settle amidst the lush greenery of the peaceful and intimate resort pool. Grab a book, a colourful drink and kick back in paradise.

They say the best dining establishments are found in cities however the Green Island Resort’s Emeralds Restaurant blows that line of thinking right out of the water! Expect incredible flavours, fresh local produce from the mainland, highly skilled chefs, an imaginative menu and a dreamy setting.

Keep the Good Times Rolling

Mother Nature, she’s the greatest artist of all time and you’ll be seeing some of her best work here on the Green Island and surrounding reef. We suggest getting yourself acquainted with your island-home with an array of activities, starting with incredible walking tracks.  As the only coral cay in the Great Barrier Reef covered by lush rainforest, have your camera on hand in order to capture the numerous birds that fly amidst the treetops.

Its comforting to know that in addition to the reef, Green Island and it’s tropical rainforest are both internationally protection under UNESCO, ensuring the continuity of an estimated 6000 year old ecological island history!

When you’ve had your fill of land, feel free to explore the crystal clear turquoise waters with a complimentary canoe or kayak rental. With such incredibly pristine water quality, tipping over and falling in was at the bottom of our list of worries (come to think of it, there really wasn’t much of a list at all!)

Snorkelling is an absolute must, especially with complementary gear hire. An incredible variety of fish and marine life (including finding Nemo’s famous Clownfish and a heap seaturtles) can be spotted a short distance from shore. We stocked up on a couple of disposable waterproof cameras and played underwater photographer for the day (National Geographics would be impressed).

For a different perspective of the reef, we hopped on the complimentary glass bottom ‘Coral Explorer’. Over a 30 minute period we learn tons of interesting information about the incredibly diverse and delicate ecosystem that thrives below the oceans surface.

The Verdict: The Great Barrier Reef, Green Island and the Green Island Resort are an unstoppable trio when it comes to an unforgettable holiday.
