VIP Airport Pick-Up

Pan Pacific Nirwana

From the moment our private vehicle rolled up to the pick-up area at Bali’s Ngurah Rai Airport in Denpasar, we knew we were in for a treat.  We settled in for a relaxing sub 60-minute drive to the stunning south-western coast of Bali, affording us the perfect opportunity to get acquainted with our new surroundings and soak up all the flavours of traditional Balinese life on-route to Nirwana — winding our way through rambling banana plantations, rice paddies and street-side markets as we ventured to the picturesque Tabanan region.

Welcome/Reception/Lobby

Pan Pacific Nirwana

Upon arriving at our destination, we were greeted with a number of spectacles which were difficult to justifiably describe with mere words.  Firstly, there was the impressive view of the Indian Ocean, just visible over a stunning infinity water feature.  Then, to the north-western side of the property we caught sight of the commanding Tanah Lot Temple with its dark, ancient features, looming out of the ocean towards the beach.  And only then, after taking a moment to assimilate to these incredible surrounds, did we appreciate the grandeur of the teak lobby that surrounded us.  After a speedy and hassle-free check-in process, we were ready to start exploring all that the Pan Pacific had to offer.

Pan Pacific Nirwana

Setting & Surroundings

Pan Pacific Nirwana

One of the most charming features of the resort is that the designers have used lush vegetation and the natural land contours to integrate and even conceal, the buildings into their surroundings.

Pan Pacific Nirwana

Having previously been the site of a large rice plantation, the undulating grounds of the 103-hectare property provide endless secluded spots in which to lose oneself, and to capture a little bit of holiday romance. Hidden around the grounds are 18 traditional Hindu temples — some dating back to a bygone era — which local villagers visit freely to pray and leave offerings.

Pan Pacific Nirwana

Every inch of the property is beautifully manicured, owing to some 300 gardeners employed to maintain the grounds. Despite its size, however, all this activity seems to be achieved without ever disturbing one’s peaceful enjoyment of the surroundings.  We took full advantage of this tranquility, enjoying sunrise strolls to Tanah Lot, mid-afternoon bike rides around the grounds and romantic cocktails in the cliff-side salas, watching the sun go down over the ocean.

Rooms

The package includes accommodation in one of the resort’s beautiful Superior Golf Rooms, which are spacious and attractively furnished. The rooms feature either king-size or queen-size bedding (adored with lavish 360 thread count Egyptian cotton linen), a cosy living area replete with comfy sofa, an ensuite bathroom with separate rain shower stall and bathtub, LCD television with local and cable channels, well-stocked mini-bar, and a private balcony that overlooks the 6th hole of the resort’s championship golf course.

Pan Pacific Nirwana

For guests who prefer a waterfront view, one of these well-appointed Superior Ocean Rooms should fit the bill nicely and offer the added benefit of a private balcony with outdoor setting which grants enticing vistas across the Indian Ocean.

Pan Pacific Nirwana

Deluxe Pool Rooms also offer charming poolside views, while the Family Rooms are popular with guests travelling with young children and feature a set of bunk-beds – lots of fun for the little ones!

Facilities

Pan Pacific Nirwana

Pan Pacific Nirwana

Starting right in front of the main buildings and cascading over three levels down to the cliffside which overlooks the beach and Tanah Lot – the swimming pool is a veritable hub of activity.  Not only does the pool provide welcome relief from the heat, but it also offers excitement through hidden spas, a water polo area, a wading pool for kids, and numerous lagoons, bridges, islands and sculptures to swim around. Not to mention the pièce de résistance, Bali’s longest resort waterslide — 54-metres of pure exhilaration for the young and the young at heart!

Pan Pacific Nirwana

As much as we enjoyed every feature the pool area had to offer, our favourite experience was escaping the hustle of the water games and slides to find our own private island sala on which to recline, relax and read a good book!

Pan Pacific Nirwana

To balance out all the relaxing we indulged in during our stay, we made an effort to visit the fitness centre each morning. Complete with air-conditioned squash courts and one of the best-equipped resort gyms we have ever seen, the fitness centre made our exertions worthwhile and afforded us every chance to work off the smorgasbord of fabulous cuisine and tasty cocktails we indulged in each day.

Pan Pacific Nirwana

Food & Drink

Renowned for its cuisine, the Pan Pacific Nirwana prides itself on using as much resort-grown and locally-sourced produce as possible.  Ambling around the grounds, we came across verdant herb gardens, vegetable beds, fruit orchards and we couldn’t miss the sprawling rice paddies which encircle the property. We were very pleased to discover that the Pan Pac shares its land with the local villagers, using only enough rice to service the resort’s four restaurants and sharing the remainder of the crop with the locals. In return, the locals help to tend the crops.

Pan Pacific Nirwana

With an array of tempting options on offer it can be difficult to decide where to dine, so in the name of ‘truly objective’ journalism, we thoroughly researched and tested each of the experiences in order to bring you our favourites!

Pan Pacific Nirwana

The Merica Restaurant is home to an extensive menu which features a combination of Western and Asian meals showcasing local seafood, imported steaks and a surprising selection of international and locally produced wines. We were taken aback by the quality of service throughout our stay, with the front-of-house staff taking pains to remember our names and our individual orders.

By day, Merica hosts a fabulous fully-cooked buffet breakfast with a regional selection of Asian and European dishes served with fresh juices, herbal drinks, premium coffee and tea (included in your package each morning of your stay).

Pan Pacific NirwanaThe Sunset Lounge was another crowd-pleaser, as the name suggests, is perfect for kicking back at the end of an activity-filled day, sipping a cocktail (or two!) while taking in the spectacular view of the sun setting over the ocean. The extensive cocktail menu showcased a host of creations, many with a local twist and a dash of resort-grown produce.  So, with a Lychee Martini in hand, the Sunset Lounge offered the perfect end to a fantastic day, and an ideal starting point for a wonderful evening.

Pan Pacific Nirwana

There are no less than three excellent options for lunch, each offering a unique experience and fantastic meal, making it difficult to choose a favourite… but we had a lot of fun trying to narrow it down! For lunch, The Pool Grill offers an extensive choice of cooked and fresh seafood options as well as light Balinese snacks, salads and traditional bar food with a gourmet twist. It was the perfect place to recharge after a morning of activity by the pool.

Pan Pacific Nirwana

As part of our package, we indulged in a delectable ‘Taste of Indonesia’ two-course lunch at The Golfer’s Terrace – an inviting dining venue which features a selection of Western and Asian fare and a great view of the 1st tee and 18th hole, is the ideal spot to relax after a round of golf. We enjoyed sensational servings of Balinese shredded chicken salad and minced fish satay with chili oil, Mie Goreng (stir-fried egg noodles and seafood), and Pisang Goreng for dessert (traditional Balinese deep fried banana with palm sugar and chocolate sauce).

We also enjoyed a scrumptious Romantic Three-Course Sunset Dinner for two at the ocean-facing Driftwood Restaurant, perfectly positioned to capture the refreshing sea breeze after sunset. Dishing up char-grilled delights and succulent locally-sourced seafood, Driftwood was an instant winner with our Travel Team.

Pan Pacific Nirwana

The package even included a three-course dining extravaganza at Driftwood which highlighted local dishes like Indian Ocean yellow fin tuna with pineapple salsa and cilantro foam; pan-seared red snapper with white bean puree, salsa verde, air-dried chorizo, asparagus, prawns and preserved lemon evoo; and a raspberry and mango white chocolate parfait with seasonal fruit and crispy meringue for dessert – yum!

Pan Pacific Nirwana

Think life can’t get much better than relaxing on a sun-lounger by the poolside? Well pair that with a satisfying serving of satay skewers served over hot coals by the pool – perfection!

Experiences

With such a diverse assortment of activities on offer, ranging from the energetic and adventurous to the indulgent and relaxing, we wanted to make sure we experienced it all.  Here are some of the unique experiences we sampled and highly recommend:

Day Spa

Pan Pacific Nirwana

Of course, after all this activity, we owed ourselves some R&R. We found this… repeatedly… in the indulgent Nirwana Day Spa. Themed as a contemporary, natural environment, the aesthetic of the facility reminded us of a Roman bathhouse, centred around an outdoor water feature with a plethora of treatment rooms accessible via covered walkways radiating from the central hub.

Pan Pacific Nirwana

With a treatment menu focused on packages including a combination of two of more complementary treatments, the Spa offered a good range of services ranging from traditional massages to beauty treatments and even hair and makeup styling.  In addition to the standard offerings for women, there was a really impressive array of treatments and packages targeted towards men, which was nice to see.

Pan Pacific Nirwana

Green Sea Turtle Release

Pan Pacific Nirwana

As part of an ongoing program to conserve the endangered Green Sea Turtle, Pan Pac Nirwana Bali offers the chance for guests to release a turtle hatchling into the ocean.  A true highlight for us, we picked up our little friend (affectionately named Leonardo ) from the holding tank and followed our expert guides down to the release beach where we watched our turtle dash for freedom, battling the sand and waves, to ultimately journey out to sea.  As eco-tourism initiatives go, this one ranks among the best for its pure fun and direct contribution.

Pan Pacific Nirwana

As an exciting, once-in-a-lifetime activity that will leave you with unforgettable memories, we couldn’t recommend this enough.

18 Holes of Golf

Pan Pacific Nirwana

The Pan Pac boasts one of Asia’s most picturesque and diverse 18-hole golf courses.  This awe-inspiring par 72, which was designed by Australia’s own legendary putting pro, Greg Norman, allows golf enthusiasts to enjoy a round surrounded by the lush resort greenery, atop sheer cliffs with breathtaking views of the ocean.

Pan Pacific Nirwana

No matter how many bad strokes we made, nothing can compare to the joy of hitting a sweet tee shot from the world-renowned 7th hole, which starts on a cliff top and sees you shooting a par 3 over a sea inlet, uphill towards Tanah Lot.  Absolutely breathtaking!

Pan Pacific Nirwana

As part of our package, we enjoyed a fun-filled Golf Driving Range Experience for two with 50 golf balls to share (don’t ask how many of the 50 actually travelled in the intended trajectory!).

Traditional Rice Planting Experience

Pan Pacific Nirwana

Another truly unique experience was the chance to get knee-deep in Balinese mud (which is apparently good for the skin!) and learn how generations of local villagers have planted and tended their paddies.  As Westerners, it was particularly eye opening to experience the precision and backbreaking effort that goes into the process.

Pan Pacific Nirwana

We were also intrigued to learn about the different types of rice plants and the plants’ growth cycle as we toured several more established paddies.

Traditional Balinese Cooking Class

Tasting an array of traditional Balinese cuisine is one thing; creating it is a whole different culinary ball game! We learnt the art of authentic Balinese cooking under the guidance of an experienced resident chef. We whipped up three flavourful dishes from scratch… but the best part of learning to cook? Being able to eat your creation afterwards.

Pan Pacific Nirwana

Free Shuttle Service to Seminyak and Kuta

If you’re interested in experiencing a taste of bustling Balinese city life, Pan Pacific also kindly offers a free daily shuttle service. It leaves conveniently from just outside the lobby so all we had to do was show up on time and enjoy the ride to the vibrant centres of Kuta and Seminyak. Once you’re there, the options are endless: taste traditional street-side cuisine, pick up a few market trinkets, visit the spectacular temples or enjoy a fruity cocktail in one of the many bars before returning to base at the Pan Pacific.

There’s no place like Pan Pacific…

When we look back over all the exciting experiences we packed into our stay at Pan Pacific Nirwana Bali, it’s hard to believe that we never left the resort grounds.  And that’s the defining uniqueness of this amazing place — all of these wonderful things: the scenery, the food, the activities and the warm Balinese hospitality, are always right on your doorstep, inviting you to get involved and feel a part of it.

Pan Pacific Nirwana

Yes, Pan Pac is removed from the standard tourist destinations, but it’s not remote… and it’s the location that enables the resort to deliver a more authentic Balinese experience than you are likely to find in other resorts.
