Vietnamese Delights: Pullman Danang Beach Resort

W elcome to the Ouffer Travel Blog, where you can read first hand reports from our expert team of travel consultants, jam-packed with photos and real accounts. The blog has been prepared by travel experts who have visited the hotel.

Mix in spectacular weather and a brilliant coastline with incredible local cuisine (perfected over centuries) and voila, you have Danang, Vietnam. As one of the most sought after beach destinations in Asia, our Travel Team were promised a vibrant holiday atmosphere, post-card worthy sunsets and food so fragrant and delicious that our pallets would forever be transformed.

With this in mind, we set off for an eight night getaway to the five-star Pullman Danang Beach Resort and spoiler alert, it did not disappoint!

Situated on a long stretch of white sandy beach – the kind of beach you could easily wile the days away on, sipping pina coladas, and soaking up the afternoon sun lies the Pullman Danang Beach Resort.

On arrival, we were greeted by the friendly and professional staff, who kindly proceeded to show us to our rooms. We chitchatted about the weather (consistently nice this time of year) and dropped our bags off into the rooms ( a ceremonious act, at least for our group, that officially marks the end of ‘in-transit travelling’ and the beggining of an exciting holiday). On entering our lovely Superior rooms, were greeted by soothing earth tones, a plush queen sized bed, sofa lounge and private balcony overlooking the beautifully landscaped grounds & gardens of the resort

As promised, dining at the Pullman was nothing short of spectacular – the ‘Restaurant Epice’ and it’s all day dining restaurant kept us well fed (very, very well fed) throughout the day.

We kicked off our mornings with the delicious buffet breakfast, stocking up on ample vitamin c via the astronomical selection of fruits both in solid and liquid form (in addition to the selection of Asian and Western Specialties).

When the hunger pangs kicked in throughout the day (it’s incredible what kind of appetite you can work up swimming in the ocean andpool while intermittently tanning on a sunbed), we bee-lined back to our favourite patio-side seats and ordered up a storm. From tiger prawns, bbq pork buns and pho, to grilled haloumi, squid and clams – the Epice definitely caters to a wide spectrum of tastes, all with reliably delicious flavours in every bite.

Fresh local ingredients (and exceptional chef’s) make all the difference! Come dinner time, we enjoyed incredible mains like seared rare flank pepper steak with balsamic shallot jus and mash as well seabass fillet with tomato  spring onion butter to finished.

For dessert, the prize winner (if there were prizes to give out) would be the extremely clever ‘Tiramisushi’ – a creative chocolate coffee cheese ice cream roll served with edible chocolate chop sticks!

Interactive Cooking Class

One of the most entertaining activities on this trip is the Vietnamese cooking class which is taught by professional Vietnamese chef’s, using fresh local ingredients sourced from nearby markets.

Famous for my less than desirable cooking skills, I was determined to wow my friends back home with a new found culinary genious.  I proceeded to temporarily transform myself into a sponge, ready to soak in the the chef’s step-by-step instructions to creating mouth-watering dishes like fresh spring rolls.

While I may lack the finesse to create a a perfectly compact Vietnamese spring roll, I had so much fun trying! The skill and patience of the chef’s, the fragrant ingredients and the incredibly friendly group of holiday-ers made this an unforgettable experience

Sci-Fi Food

Perhaps one day in the distant future, the incredible scientific feat that is nitrogen gelato won’t completely and utterly wow us (see history of Morse code or the telegraph). With eyes peeled open in amazement and mouths agape, we watched as the the chef’s poured liquid nitrogen (used as a cooling agent)  into a mixture of milk, cream, sugar and egg yolk (and flavour of choice) in order to create ice-cream in record speed (by record speed, we mean instantly!).

While the process and its accompanying cloud of mist was initially unfamiliar, the end product was a deliciously and dependably tasty strawberry ice cream with a fresh flavor and one fine ice-creamy texture.

While it may take years and years to become a disciplined meditative Zen Master who seeps peace, balance and tranquility out of every pore, that should not stop you from acting proactively about your journey to blissful enlightenment (it’s all about baby steps).

For my own personal development, I chose to become a regular at the Pullman’s Spa Lounge over the course of the eight night holiday. With the help of the incredibly friendly and well trained staff, I made great strides.

Combining a fusion of Ayurvedic and Thai massage techniques with the surrounding wood, glass and stone of the facility, created an incredibly calming environment. I hadn’t quite reached ‘Buddha under the apple tree enlightenment’ but I can tell you that I felt blissfully balanced and incredible through and through.

Hoi An

When you’re a quick 30 minute ride from a well-preserved 15th century South East Asian trading port/UNESCO World Heritage Site, you temporarily lay down your multicoloured cocktail and swing by for a gander.

The famous city of ‘Hoi-An’, which translated as ‘peaceful meeting place’ is an bustling melting pot of culture, with hundreds of quaint restaurants and bars proudly showcasing the flavours of the region and beyond.

As we wandered through the winding streets, mesmerized by the colours and the irresistibly exotic atmosphere,  we could feel a palpable sense of historical significance with each passing step.  This enchanting city (and one time largest harbour in South East Asia) has stories to tell – we stuck around late into the night, adding our own tiny specks to a rich narrative.

Stopover -Hotel Equatorial Ho Chi Minh City

Staying in one five star hotel is great, but two five star hotels is just grand. Vietnam has a lot to offer, so we also spent two days in the bustling metropolis of Ho Chi Minh City at the fabulous Hotel Equatorial.

The rooms at Hotel Equatorial are tasteful and well appointed with a comfortable 32sqm of space to unwind in. You can sink into the lush King bed (or you can get two Twin beds) like we did, turn on the air-con, switch on the satellite TV from your bedside control and take some time out between sightseeing in the ultimate comfort.

Hotel Equatorial also has an open-air swimming pool gymnasium, and even a spa which offers massages and facial treatments.

We also indulged our senses at the Orientica Seafood Restaurant & Bar for a a lavish seven-course dining degustiation. It’s tucked away on the second floor of the hotel where you can enjoy the sight, sound and smell of your seafood dinner being prepared before you with fire, steam or ice. It’s fine dining with a twist, and fresh seafood straight up in Vietnamese style. The restaurant was reviewed and selected in Vietnam’s Top 100 Restaurants by Gourmet Vietnam and is definitely worth a try while you’re in Ho Chi Minh City.

Perfectly positioned just out of the hectic city centre, but close enough to experience the bustling buzz of Ho Chi Minh; Hotel Equatorial provides perfect access to all the sights and attractions including a taste of history at the famous Cu Chi Tunnels and War Museum, or a visit to the thriving commercial sector with fantastic markets and a wealth of chic bars and restaurants.
