Five-Star Sensation: The Sunrise Hoi An Beach Resort

W elcome to the Ouffer Travel Blog, where you can read first hand reports from our expert team of travel consultants, jam-packed with photos and real accounts. The blog has been prepared by travel experts who have visited the hotel.

Sunrise Beach Resort Hoi An is situated alongside a pristine beach close to one of Vietnam’s most popular cultural landmarks – Hoi An. This area is noticeably nicer than the more bustling coasts of Thailand, and well and truly free from the throngs of people who descend on some of the overcrowded beaches of Phuket and Bali. The nearby Non Nuoc beach in Da Nang was even crowned one of the Six Most Beautiful Beaches in the World by Forbes Magazine.

The Arrival

Our package included a handy  shuttle transfer from the Airport, so we were conveniently whisked off to the resort almost as soon as we hit we hit the ground. Our arrival was well coordinated, so having had a sleepless night on the plane, we dozed off during the half an hour drive to the resort. On arrival, check-in was seamless (as you would expect from a luxury resort of this calibre).

The lobby is impressive – with huge ceilings, and a view that expands out to the main swimming pool and the ocean beyond.

The atmosphere was very relaxed, summery, and modern. The friendly Vietnamese staff helped us with check-in and within moments we were whisked away to our rooms.

The Pools

The Main Pool

Everything about this resort involves water! There is an enormous main pool with various sections – for people to stand around in, a section for kids, and a jacuzzi as well. It’s simply spectacular. The crystal clear blue waters lie just moments from the spacious main pool, which itself is surrounded by a number of decorative pools.

Surrounding the pool are a number of palm trees and deck chairs. We loved the landscaping with vast pools of water in the decorative ponds, which just made everything seem so refreshing and relaxing.

The Infinity Lap Pool

Further down past the beachside restaurant is the infinity pool and the resort’s own private white sand sun-baking area with deck chairs. You get the best of both worlds really with the lap pool, the ocean beyond and the all-important cocktail service!

Imagine doing laps where the end point is the ocean and beyond? On either side of the pool is a man made white sand beach, where you can lounge on the deck chairs.  The ocean is again just moments away.

The resort consists of 222 luxurious rooms, suites and beachfront villas, all boasting fresh, open, contemporary features, designed by celebrity British architect, David Hodkinson.

There are two main room options in the main wing of the resort. The Deluxe Rooms are spacious and have a choice of either a king bed or two singles with soft fresh linen. An additional bed can be brought in if you’re travelling with kids. The beds look out towards the balcony and the ocean. You can even sit on the undercover balcony and read up on what to do in Hoi An while taking in the spectacular view.

The bathrooms are well appointed, showers are enormous and have all the usual luxurious amenities. The array of brand name soaps and shampoos are replaced daily.

The VIP Upgrade

If you’re looking for even more luxury, the offer gives you the choice to upgrade to a VIP Package (for a surcharge). This package offers the extra perk of an upgraded suite room. The Superior Suite is simply massive (with a whopping 85sqm floor-plan) and contains a separate living area with a 40″ LCD flat-screen TV and other modern features. It’s on a higher floor of the resort complex and guarantees stunning views and plenty of living space with a touch of extra luxury.

Depending on your budget, this VIP Upgrade is a fantastic option.

Spa and Pampering

If choosing to enjoy a Half-Board stay, guests are entitled to an incredible 240-minutes’ worth of spa treatments per package! The spa treatments at Sunrise are a real highlight. While there are lots of affordable massage options in Hoi An town, we loved the elegance of the in-house Bodyworks Spa – and it’s a lot easier than having to travel for a massage.

The spa itself is the pinnacle of relaxation. You can cocoon yourself in the serene and soothing atmosphere where you choose your indulgence from a full range of treatments and therapies. The spa features five individual treatment rooms for privacy, where you can let the soft sounds and soothing signature aroma of honey, cloves, coconut oil and golden turmeric to transport you to a whole other level of serenity.

Aside from the beautiful setting, there are experienced spa therapists with skilled hands who are delighted to give customised, individual attention. From hot stone therapies and massages to gentle herbal detoxification and anti-aging facials, they’ll handcraft the perfect spa experience. The spa uses premium Thann Spa products for the natural benefit of plant extracts which are believed to create balance and promote wellness. It’s an all-round exquisite experience that’ll leave you feeling like you’ve been on holiday for a lot longer than a few days.

Food, Food, Food! And Hoi An’s famous for it…

Sunrise offers a great variety of dining options in its Western and Vietnamese restaurants, as well as the Beach and Lobby bars.

You can get all your classic western favourites at the Sensations restaurant and poolside.

What we loved the most was the Vietnamese food on offer. Since Hoi An is considered the culinary capital of Vietnam, it makes sense that the resort boasts deliciously authentic Vietnamese ‘street food’ cuisine at reasonable prices.

The breakfasts were also absolutely amazing and made the most fantastic start to the day.

Evenings are bliss at the Sunrise. Apart from the stunning view of the main lobby and front rooms from the beachside restaurant, the balmy evenings make for a beautiful night to relax with some of the resort’s expertly prepared cocktails under the stars. And for those who are game there is even a trendy little ‘Shisha’ bar area, where you can immerse yourself in the intoxicating aromas of fresh apricot, peach, and apple flavoured tobacco.

Vietnamese Cooking Class

We also took part in Sunrise’s famous traditional Vietnamese cooking class which includes food shopping, learning how to prepare, and dining on your own authentic creation. It’s a lot of fun and an impressive new skill to show off to friends and family back at home.

We were taught by a professional local Chef who knew all the ins and outs of authentic Vietnamese cuisine and how to create it. One of the dishes we learnt to cook was the famous Pho, which is now extremely popular back home in Australia (a definite dinner party crowd pleaser!).

While it’s tempting to spend all your time by one of the stunning pools, there are a wealth of other facilities to enjoy. We loved hiring bikes and taking a ride around the picturesque region during the day, having a hit of table tennis in the afternoon, or you can even pay a small fee and play on the big tennis courts in the evening beneath the floodlights.

There’s also a fully-equipped gym to work off any extra calories from all the exquisite food. The beach is also just a skip away and kayaking are available for use by resort guests. You can also delight in a variety of other water sports, from body boarding and wake boarding, to navigating the waters on a Banana Boat. The adventurous will be intrigued to try parasailing which is renowned along the Hoi An coast. Qualified Resort Activity Attendants are also on-hand to organise daily activities like beach volleyball and football too.

Visiting Hoi An

Sunrise is located near the famous city of Hoi An. Known for its culinary delights, it’s a must-do attraction. You can catch a free shuttle from the resort to Hoi An Town. Hoi An is famous for its cooking schools – we did a one day cooking course (but regretted not taking a longer course as we picked up lots of fantastic tips). Moments down the road in the Old Town of Hoi An, you can visit the markets filled with fresh local produce. There are literally hundreds of little restaurants and bars in Hoi An – far too many to visit them all, but we’d certainly suggest making at least two trips to town if you can find the time between dips in the pools back at Sunrise.

Ho Chi Minh City Stay: Five-Star Sofitel Saigon Plaza

Either before or after the Sunrise stay, you’ll have the opportunity to experience the wonderful sights and sounds of Vietnam’s eclectic city of Saigon / Ho Chi Minh at the five-star Sofitel Saigon Plaza.

We chose to go to Ho Chi Minh after Hoi An, but since the two parts of the trip are booked separately, you can pick and choose whatever suits you best. Airport transfers (via swanky private limousine!) were provided as part of the package, making the trip easy. All we had to do was sit back and enjoy the ride through the vibrant city.

Perfectly positioned to experience bustling Ho Chi Minh, the Sofitel Saigon Plaza is a contemporary luxury hotel on tree-lined Le Duan Boulevard, just moments from the commercial centre of Ho Chi Minh City.

We used the Sofitel as a perfect base to experience a taste of real history with the famous War Remnants Museum (which is a haunting and interesting reminder of the devastating war) just a short cab ride or public transport trip away. Ho Chi Minh also has a thriving commercial sector with fantastic shopping and a wealth of restaurants to try.

There’s also the famous Bến Thành Market to visit, where you can immerse yourself in the vibrant Vietnamese culture and atmosphere. The market building itself is a sight to see as one of the earliest surviving structures in Ho Chi Minh. It’s filled with local handicrafts, textiles, traditional áo dài costumes and plenty of souvenirs, as well as local cuisine that’s hard to resist.

The Rooms

Marvel at the stylish French touches in the newly renovated, five-star Superior Rooms at the Sofitel Saigon. Tasteful, comfortable and well-appointed; the rooms feature the comfort of a Sofitel MyBed with your choice from the heavenly pillow menu, Saigon River or city views, spacious elegance and modern amenities.

Guests travelling on the package also have the chance to upgrade their Sofitel Saigon stay by indulging in a VIP Upgrade to a Club Sofitel Luxury Room, which offers a host of added benefits including access to the hotel’s Club Sofitel Lounge where cocktails and canapes flow into the night!

Don’t forget to try Sofitel’s two unique restaurants – Cafe Rivoli which features exquisite international cuisine and L’Olivier Restaurant which offers delectable French cuisine. Sofitel’s buffet breakfast is also included in the offer so you can wake up to a tantalising selection of Western and oriental delights each morning of your two-night stay.

Sofitel Saigon also has a luxurious rooftop pool to help you escape the hustle and bustle of Ho Chi Minh after a day of sightseeing, plus a fully equipped fitness centre and sauna. In the tranquil Rendezvous Natural Spa, you’ll also enjoy a 30-minute rejuvenating foot massage using only 100% pure and active botanical products – just as a last treat to top off the decadent trip.
